Miss Jennie Brainerd Laid To Rest In Oak Knoll Cemetery 
Palmer - Miss Jennie Brainerd, 70, of 1 Breckinridge Street, died late Thursday at Wing Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Palmer, January 17, 1875, daughter of George H. and Jane E. (Breckinridge) Hastings. Her birth mother died shortly after her birth and a few months later, she was adopted by her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Brainerd of Palmer. She was educated in the local schools, graduating from Palmer High School in the class of 1892.
For many years she was an active member of the Second Congregational Church, beginning as a teacher in the primary department of its Sunday School 53 years ago. She had maintained her connections with the Sunday School continuously since that time, and for a number of years had been superintendent of the primary department and the cradle roll. She was also a member and former officer of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society and an honorary member of the Lamplighter’s Club.
Miss Brainerd was a charter member of Revere Chapter, OES and after serving as worthy matron, became secretary, a position she held for 39 years.
Miss Brainerd came of one of Palmer’s oldest pioneer families, being descended from James Breckinridge, who came to Palmer from Ireland in 1727. Her great – great – grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and grandfather was among the number who left the old church at Palmer Center nearly 100 years ago and founded the Second Congregational Church here.
She had for many years been the proprietor of the Colonial Coffee House, which she operated in connection with her home on the old Brainerd farm on Park Street.
She leaves two half-sisters, Miss Bertha Hastings of Palmer, and Mrs. Della A. Wilson of Detroit; a niece, Miss Edna R. Mason of Palmer, and five cousins.
The funeral was held Sunday from her home on Breckinridge street with the Rev. Enoch Hughes of the Second Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Oak Knoll Cemetery.
Revere Chapter, OES was represented with honorary bearers. Active bearers were Louis Brainerd, Robert Brainerd, Charles Dingman, Ernest Carpenter, Leon Brock and Lewis Flower.

Jennie Brainerd (1875-1945) is buried with her adoptive parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brainerd at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Palmer, Massachusetts. Her birth parents George Hastings (1839-1907) and Jane Breckenridge Hastings (1845-1875) are buried nearby in the same cemetery.
Adele Davis Wallace Haverland
Adele Davis Wallace Haverland died peacefully on January 1, 2011 in Long Beach, California. Adele was born February 1, 1915 in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in nearby Springfield.
Adele and her husband, James Duncan Wallace, moved first to South Dakota, then to Lawton, Oklahoma and, finally Phoenix, Arizona, in service of James' career as an educator. In 1984, Adele moved to Deanne Drive in Sun City, where she happily resided until 2007, when she moved to an assisted living facility in Southern California to be close to her family.
Adele will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her for her ever-agile mind, quick sense of humor, bridge skills, and devotion to family.
Adele was preceded in death by her husband, James; her second husband, Fred Haverland; and her daughter, Barbara Wallace. Adele is survived by her son, James Davis Wallace, and his wife, Alana; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at Menke Funeral Home, 12420 N. 103rd Avenue, Sun City, Arizona. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church, 11025 N. 111th Avenue, Sun City, AZ 85351, where she was a happy parishioner for many years.
